Karst country soils are very shallow and take four to ten times longer to rebuild than other soils. They quickly erode and degrade whenever exposed, more so since Texas karst country is prone to gully-washing rains and hot summers.
It is essential to keep karst country soils covered, especially during managing and developing operations. Yet our primary approach to land management has been to repeatedly clear out cedar brush, leaving the karst country exposed and vulnerable to erosion, and dehydration. Repeatedly clearing cedar brush is not a solution--it's just a quick fix that ends up causing more long-term harm than short-term good. |
Within karst landscapes…alteration of vegetative communities of any sort can lead to substantial and potentially irreversible impacts on the karst processes.
